"Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Equipment - Golite Breeze

The Breeze is a lightweight, top loading pack that features 2 mesh side pockets, and a large mesh back pocket. The back pocket runs from the top of the pack to the bottom of the pack. The pack also features 2 loops at each bottom corner of the pack.

The shoulder straps are generously padded, maybe too much so. There is no hip belt on this bag. The top of the bag features an expansion collar that rolls or folds down, The collar is closed by a draw cord and a strap.

The author owned a second generation model. First generation models had a quality defect with the mesh pockets, which were susceptible to damage from premature wear. This issue was corrected in second generation models.

In an example of Golite Customer Service and Support, owners of first generation models were able to have their packs repaired free of charge.

Golite manufactured the Breeze pack with license from Ray Jardine, the packs designer and proponent of The Ray Way. A common misconception is that Ray Jardine owned Golite - this is simply not true.

The pack will carry loads based on individual comfort factors. The Breeze is not designed to carry a 25lb load. With this pack you must commit to ultralight principles. Based on my preferences the Breeze will comfortably carry 16 lbs. More than that and my shoulders begin to feel the effort after a long day of hiking. The absence of a waist belt is a blessing for some. I find that my knees do not ache after a long day of walking with this pack - but sadly, my shoulders do. Ray Jardine most often hiked by alternately carrying the pack over a single shoulder. Perhaps that is a workable solution?

One drawback to the Breeze is interior volume. Getting pack weight down is not a problem, but reducing volume has been a challenge for me. My average gear volume is in the 2900 - 3000 cubic inch range, including food and fuel. The Breeze is an awkward beast with the expansion collar unfolded.

Golite is no longer producing the Breeze. Ray Jardine did not renew his licensing agreement with Golite. Golite will continue to sell existing items of Ray-Way gear until stocks are depleted. This will not affect the remaining inventory of Golite gear, as Ray-Way items only accounted for 3% of Golite's annual sales.
