"Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Equipment - SVEA 123R

Optimus SVEA 123R/Climber - A true classic stove constructed of solid brass parts. First manufactured in the late 1800's and still outperforming newer stoves in terms of reliability. You can drop this stove down the side of a mountain and it will still light! The author once over primed the SVEA 123R and watched in horror as his stove was completely engulfed in vertically shooting flames. No problem for the little SVEA 123. Just wipe off the smudge marks and continue on.

The 123R weights in at 17 oz. and boils water in about 8 minutes. It is not the fastest or lightest model out there, but it is fuel efficient, very reliable, and nearly indestructible. The author's model worked flawlessly for nearly 10 years until lost in a cross country move.

This is not an ultralight stove, and is best for 1 -2 persons, but it does work, and work well. The attached fuel tank is an added advantage for overnight and weekend trips - you don't have to bring an additional fuel bottle.
