Equipment - Trangia Mini 28 Stove
The Trangia alcohol stove comes in several models including the Westwind and 28. The Westwind adds to the base stove 4 interlocking parts to form a wind screen and pot base. The 28 uses a pre-formed cup to perform the same function. I have used this stove on many trips. It is simple, foolproof, and never fails. You do have to watch carefully for the flames - I have burned my fingers a few times when I thought the stove was out, but in fact was still lit. That is a characteristic of the clean burning denatured alcohol the Trangia alcohol stove uses. The Trangia is not the fastest stove in the kitchen. The stove takes about 8 - 10 minutes to bring a half-liter of water to a rolling boil in 55 degree weather. I highly recommend using a foil reflector base and foil windscreen to make the most of the limited BTU output. If you are patient, the Trangia alcohol stove will reward your efforts. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the break while the stove does the work! In previous years REI/MSR offered the Trangia Westwind stove, as well as other models. For the 2002 year, MSR no longer imports these stoves, and REI does not appear to stock them anymore. One of our readers, AOL Steve, reports the Trangia is available from Thru-Hiker and Piragis.
