world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are
moving." Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. |
Below are a collection of links you may find useful. Some are devoted to ultralight backpacking and have specific information for the ultralight backpacker. Links to sites regarding general backpacking, equipment, and general outdoor skills are also included. Personal Sites Great Lakes Lightweight Backpacking - Rick Halbert's site details the evolution of a lightweight backpacker. Lots of insight and good information. Joe's Ultralight Backpacking - Joe's site was the primary source of information and techniques I used to get started in ultralight backpacking. Joe and I exchange e-mail from time to time. Great person, always eager to help. I owe him my thanks for inspiration and the starting techniques of a Ultralight Backpacker. John's Ultralight Backpacking Page - Lots of good information here. Michael's Ultralight Backpacking Page - A wonderful site. Michael shares his experiences and a wealth of information. Ray Jardine - What can I say? This is a guy who contributed so much to the ultralight philosophy. Inventor of the Breeze ultralight backpack, the quilt sleep system, the cave shelter, and Friends climbing device to name a few. Pure genius.
Commercial Sites Backpacker.com - Informative articles on destinations. Excellent annual equipment review in the March issue. Some issues feature articles on Ultralight techniques. This link references the Ultralight Backpacking Center. Check it out. Backpacking Light - Magazine devoted to gear reviews and techniques to advance lightweight hiking and backpacking. Gear shop features innovative and exclusive ultralight backpacking gear. Earth Heart - Are you drawn to a personal intimate experience with the God who created you, by a feeling in your heart? Seeking a direction, the path in life that will bring you the most joy and fulfillment? Malcom H. Ringwalt is a genuine good soul with a pure heart. His place is the one to go visit. Golite Gear
- This is a great source of ultralight gear. Outstanding customer
service! Only the Lightest Camping Equipment - Check out Steve's site - just like the name says, "only the lightest camping equipment." Pro Mountain Sports - Interesting 7.5 lbs. gear list. How does your gear list compare? REI & REI Outlet - Recreational Equipment Incorporated, or REI is a cooperative organization the provides outdoor sporting goods and apparel. The Coop was founded in 1938. Members receive end of year dividend refunds on the equipment purchased during the year. I have been a member for over 15 years and cannot say enough good things about this organization. Rockfish Gap Outfitters - A regional outdoor gear supplier located in Waynesboro, Virginia. The store is also conveniently located near the Appalachian Trail junction with Rockfish Gap. Friendly, knowledgeable staff treat you right every time. Tireless Trekker - Offering many equipment options for backpackers, including one of my personal favorites - Snow Peak's carry-on chopsticks. Great gear selection. Tom Brown's Tracker School - If you truly want to experience freedom, gain priceless skills that are our birthright, and walk the path of our ancestors, this is the man to learn from. I cannot thank Tom enough for what I have learned - and continue to learn about the earth, the wilderness, and my relationship with it. Meet The Tracker himself - an ordinary guy with an extraordinary teaching talent. Trangia Westwind Stove Set - Not the lightest stove, but it is my personal favorite. It weighs in at around 7 oz. It uses a clean-burning, cheap, nontoxic fuel - denatured alcohol. REI sold MSR in 2002. The United States distributor is now Liberty Mountain. The manufacturer page is at Trangia. |
